The annual endurance test around the Crystal Palace triangle \, which is organised as a joint event with the CAMRA branches from SE Lon don and from Croydon & Sutton.

The first pub – the Dou glas Fir – opened in November 2016 and is located between Crystal Palace and Anerley rail/London Overground stations. Bus travellers should use r outes 157\, 249\, 358 or 432 and alight at Thicket Road / Madeline Road. \n

Unfortunately the RMT have called a strike for the date of t his trip\, so we can no longer rely on the planned rail travel. We hope that the trip can be rearranged for a later date.

This is one of our occasional “out o f branch area” trips\, this time to the historic and picturesque town of R ye\, located two miles from the coast in East Sussex. Rye is a very smal l town\, and for anyone of normal fitness\, walking between the various pu bs that we visit will present no problem.

Rye station is on a bran ch line which runs along the South coast. So our plan is catch the 10:03 from Orpington to St.Leonards/Warrior Square\, changing there to catch the 11.20 connecting train to Rye\, arriving in Rye at 11.47.

At the time of w riting\, the detailed agenda for the day has not been finalised\, but a handout guide to Rye pubs will be available on the day. Some of the pubs that we may visit include the following :-

This is a replacement event due to the proposed rail strike on this date. However it creates a chance to visit two of the best pubs close to Bromley’s border with Kent\, both of which have extensive gardens . The second pub is actually (just) in Kent proper. Both pubs serve fo od\, as well as a range of cask ales.

Our plan is travel on the R 10 bus from Orpington bus station (next to the railway station) at 12:03\, to arrive at the pub at around 12.30. The bus calls at Green Street Gre en at 12:21.

At 14:50 we depart The Blacksmith’s Arms to catch the R10 bus which is due at 14:58. We should arrive at The Rose & Crown by 15:20.

The next bus back towards Orpington will be the R10 due at 17:29\, but buses are infrequent on this route. The full timetable can be seen here. IF TRAINS ARE RUNNING\, it’s also po ssible to walk from the Rose and Crown to Knockholt station – allow 40 min utes unless you’re a quick walker. It’s an enjoyable rural walk though\, and is entirely flat or downhill.

An annual “Cramble” (CAMRA ramble ) has beco me something of a branch tradition and offers a chance to combine a health y walk of about 6 miles with visits to up to six of of our more rural pubs \, all of which serve cask ale. The route mainly follows some of Bromle y CAMRA’s “pub walks”. Click here to see details of all of our pub walks.

Ou r plan is meet at the front of Hayes station which can be reached by train or by using bus routes 119\, 138\, 246 or 314 from Central Bromley or the 353 from Orpington. In all cases alight at Hayes Station.

The w alk will begin 11:30\, so please arrive in good time. We then walk the 1 .3 miles to Keston where will have our first pub break. See Pub Wa lks – Route 1. Keston offers a choice of either the Greyhound or the Fox.

Duly refreshed\, at 13:00 we will b egin the 2.5 mile walk to Downe. This roughly follows pub walks 4 and 5\ , although we have altered the route slightly to avoid a number of stiles near the end of the route. Downe also has two pubs serving cask ale – th ese are the George and Dragon and the Queen’s Head.

At 15:00 we will begin the final section of the walk which follows pub walk 8 for 2.1 miles to Farnborough.

O nce again\, there is a choice of pubs at Farnborough\, these being the Chan ge of Horses and the Woodman.

Farnborough is served by bus route 358 which offers an easy way back to Bromley\, Beckenham or Orpington.

This social could be affected by railway engineering work or by industrial action by railway employees – if so we will update this cal endar entry as soon as we become aware.

But hopefully\, this will be a first-ever visit by Bromley CAMRA to the picturesque and histor ic village of Aylesford in the Medway Valley\, in a joint social with our friends at Orpington Liberal Club.

The plan is to catch the 11:06 from Bromley South (calling at St Mary Cray at 11:12) where most of the OLC contingent are likely to join us. T his train continues to Dover\, but we change at Rochester and then Strood to get the Medway Valley branch line service to Aylesford\, arriving at 12 :19. The station is just over half a mile from the pub.

The Little Gem is a grade II listed pub\, and is now an outlet for Goachers beers which are brewed nearby. There are also some other pubs (and a village club) in Aylesford. The writer (TW) will proba bly try to visit the nearby Chequers which is also grade II listed\, and looks like the highlight of the other pubs.

A chance to visit some of the best pubs that Kent’s county town can offer the discerning cask ale drinker. Some walking will be in volved but this shouldn’t be a problem for anyone of reasonable fitness.\n

The plan is to take the 11:12 train from Bromley S outh which calls at St Mary Cray at 11:18 and arrives at Maidstone East at 11:59. Our first port of call will be the Flower Pot. The timings for the remainder of the trip are not yet available\, but the pubs are likely to include the Cellars Alehouse\, the Olde Thirsty Pig\, and finishing at The Rifle Volunteers wh ich is near the station. We have visited the SIBA festival held at this venue before in summer. This time we are visiting the club’s own beer festival which is more focused on winter ales. With winter now officially over (Spring equinox is on the 2 0th)\, we will have our first trip outside our area of the New Year\, in the form of a day trip to Faversham – home to the Shepherd Neame brewery ( est. 1698)\, one of oldest surviving businesses in the country.

Th e plan is to meet at Bromley South station at 11:15 in order to catch the 11.27 train to direct to Faversham\, arriving at 12:25. One of the town’ s most well-known pubs is right by the station\, so we will begin our tour there at 12.30. This is The Elephant\, 31 The Mall ME13 8JN.

We will then head to the remote Shipwrights Arms\, Hollowshore ME13 7TU. This pub is located about a mile nort h of the town\, close to the Swale which separates mainland Kent from the Isle of Sheppey. Due to the remoteness\, minicabs will be arranged\, al though the intrepid may enjoy the walk. Various routes are available\, i ncluding along the Saxon Shore Way.

The return of the tra ditional Easter beer festival at the Greyhound which – as usu al – will run from Good Friday to Easter Monday. The festival traditiona lly features a range of beers which are not normally available in this are a. Temporary stillage is normally erected at the rear of the pub\, so that all the 16 or so beers are available all the time\, rather than being rot ated through the handpumps as happens at some other pub beer festivals.

This station is located between Orpington and Sevenoaks and is the final station on the line for which Oyster cards\, 60+ cards and London Freedom Passes can be used. Our plan is to meet at Sidcup Station to catch the 11: 12 train. After a change of trains in Dartford we are due to arrive in Gr avesend at 11:46. Sidcup station can be easily reached from Bromley North bus station using routes 269 or the relatively new SL5 Superloop routes. Both of these routes also stop near Bickley and then Chislehurst station s. (Members with a 60+ oyster card or a freedom pass only need to pay fr om Dartford.)

Bromley CAMRA have recently been invited to join a social in St. Albans with Croydon & Sutton branch. Former member of the National Executive – Ben Wilkinson – is also expected to be in attendance.

The meeting point is the Great North ern\, about 400 metres from St. Albans City station\, and then we plan to visit several other pubs thereafter.

From Bromley South we plan to catch the 10:33 stopping service to Victoria\, then changing a t Herne Hill to get the 10:57 to St Albans City. No stairs are involved in making this change at Herne Hill\, and St. Albans City is completely st ep-free.

We celebrate the arrive of Spring with our first out of area event by visiting the coastal town of Ramsgate with its numerous Good Bee r Guide pubs.

The plan is to meet at Bromley South station at 9:40 am\, in order to catch the 9:57 direct to Ramsgate\, arriving at 11:35. (Note that this train does NOT stop at St Mary Cray).

Our first st op will be at the Conqueror Alehouse\, w hich is located about half a mile from the station\, at 4C Grange Road. This is the first micropub in Thanet. It opens at noon.

The London spring cider festival returns again this year on Saturday April 25th with a fine selection of traditional ciders and perrie s from small producers around the country and also including a number from London cider makers.

This venue is a short (about 400 yards) walk from Elephant & Castle station\, which can be reached by direct trains fr om Bromley South and other stations on the Thameslink line through the bor ough. An alternative route would be to travel to London Bridge and the n use the tube to get to Elephant and Castle.

Doors open at noon\, and the festival will remain open until 9pm unless all the drink is sold out earlier.

Bromley CAMRA’s 2023 Pub of the Year competition has been won by one of our newest pubs – The Cockpit. The Cockpit is Chislehurst’ s first micropub\, and opened its doors for the first time in late Decembe r 2020. The start ing pub is the Greyhound which reopened in 2018 having been closed for aro und a decade. It is within a few yards of Sydenham rail/Overground stati on. This popular festival can be reached by train. However the closest station – Kidbrooke – is about 20 minutes walk away\, and there a re no direct trains from there to any station in our borough\, so a change of trains (probably at Lewisham or Nunhead depending upon your starting p oint) will be needed.

For some members it may be easier to use th e 314 bus which starts in New Addington and passes Bromley South on its wa y to Eltham. The Three Hounds is a relatively new bar/pub/shop which began life by operating a delivery service during the Covid lockdow n. Although the beer selection is mainly keg (up to 12 offerings)\, cask ale has gradually become more prominent\, with up to three choices often available nowadays.

This social combines visits to two traditional pubs in the s outh of the borough and which are linked by the 320 bus route which goes p ast the front door of both of them.

We begin at 19:30 at the Black Horse which has improved its real ale offering in recent years and is worth a visit if you haven’t tried it recently. Despite its remote location i n Biggin Hill\, the pub is easy to get to since it has a bus stop outside its front door on the high-frequency 320 route which starts in Catford and passes both Bromley North and Bromley South stations. Alight at Biggin Hill/Black Horse. Routes 246\, 464 and R2 also serve this stop\, but a re less frequent.

At the July 2023 Beckenham beer and cider festival\, the “ beer of the festival”\, as voted for by attendees\, was “Where’s The Blood y Vindaloo Hippy?” (or Hippie – the brewers themselves spell it both ways) . It is a chili chocolate stout brewed by Bromley’s own Marlix brewery.

The evening begins at 7pm at One Inn The Wood. This pub is close to Petts Wood railwa y station\, and can also be reached by the 208 bus from Central Bromley or Orpington. The 273\, R2\, R3 and R7 routes also pass close by. In all c ases\, alight at Petts Wood Station. One in the Wood was Bromley’s first micropub having opened in 2014 on a site previously occupied by a wine bar . It has won an array of CAMRA awards\, including Greater London CAMRA P ub of the Year in 2015. It is now under new management.

From there we continue by bus 208 to the Hit or Miss. This new venue opened its doors for the first time on in O ctober 2022\, in premises which were previously occupied by a computer rep air and sales shop. It describes itself thus: A cafe by day\, a microbar b y night. For those joining the social here \, use bus routes 61\, 208\, 261\, 320 or 358 from Central Bromley and alight at Southlands Road. The Cockpit is Chislehurst’s first micropub\, and opened its doors for the first time in late December 2020. A range of at at least 5 non-ma instream real ales are normally available\, served from a cold room at the rear of the pub. It is currently the Bromley CAMRA Pub of the Year. Fr om Central Bromley\, use buses 162 (Beckenham Junction to Eltham) or 269 ( Bromley North to Bexleyheath). Both routes can be caught in Central Bro mley and also pass Chislehurst station. From other parts of the borough routes 61\, 160\, 161 or 273 can be used. In all cases alight at Chisle hurst War Memorial. The social starts at 7pm.

This is the biggest pub real ale festival in the branch area \, and traditionally takes place during the Easter weekend. Around 15 real ales will be available from around the country\, none of which are normal ly available in Bromley. Bromley CAMRA have a reserved table for at least eight people.

Bromley CAMRA’s 2024 Pub of the Year competition has again been won by one of our newest pubs – The Cockpit. The Co ckpit is Chislehurst’s first micropub\, and opened its doors for the first time in late December 2020. A range of at at least 5 non-mainstream real ales are normally available\, served from a cold room at the rear of the pub. The presentation of the winner’s award will be made during the even ing\, so a good turn out of our members would be welcome.

This new venue (located a t Rocket Van Studio\, 92 Brandon Street SE17 1AL) is about 400 yards walk from Elephant & Castle station\, which can normally be reached by direct t rains from Bromley South and other stations on the Thameslink line. Howe ver\, engineering work may be taking place on this route on the date of th e festival so please check the national rail journey planner if you plan to attend. An alternative route would be to travel to London Bridg e and then use the tube to get to Elephant and Castle.

A consistently excellent beer festival. The venu e can be reached by train to Bexley station\, or alternatively catch the 2 69 from Bromley North to Bexleyheath (via Bickley\, Chislehurst and Sidcup ) and alight at Bexley War Memorial. Either way a walk of about 15 minute s is then needed\, although a short journey on local bus routes 132\, 229 or 492 from Bexley can be used to get closer. Alight at Hartford Road. (Note by TW – I looked into whether the new Superloop bus route SL3 wou ld make the journey even easier. It doesn’t!. But if you just miss th e 269 at Bromley North\, and an SL3 arrives\, the latter will probably ove rtake the former by Chislehurst or Sidcup as its a limited stop service).

Adm ission is £3 for CAMRA members and this includes a commemorative beer glas s (which however cannot be returned for a refund).

For most member s in our branch area\, the most convenient way to reach the venue is by us ing the train to East Dulwich station which is little more than 100 metres from the venue. This station can be reached by using the half-hourly st opping service from Beckenham Junction to London Bridge. The service als o stops in our branch area at Birkbeck and Crystal Palace.

This social combines visits to three traditional pubs in the south of the borough which are linked by the 320 bus route.

We be gin at 19:30 at the Black Horse which has improved its real ale offering in recent years and is worth a visit if you haven’t tri ed it recently. Despite its remote location in Biggin Hill\, the pub is easy to get to since it has a bus stop outside its front door on the high- frequency 320 route which starts in Catford and passes both Bromley North and Bromley South stations. Alight at Biggin Hill/Black Horse. Route s 246\, 464 and R2 also serve this stop\, but are less frequent.

W e will then continue (using the 320 to the Oakley Road/The Limes stop) to the Bird in Hand\, which has recently reinstated real ale after a few years absence\, as part of a major refurbishment. A rrival time approximately 9pm.

The longest day of the year offers a chance to visit the pic turesque village of Downe which can easily be reached by bus and contains two well-regarded pubs which both serve cask ale. The village can be rea ched the 146 from Bromley North/South or the R8 (Orpington station to Biggin Hill) and alight at the terminus in Downe Village. But the services are infrequent (approximately hourly for the 146 and every 9 0 minutes for the R8) so check the timetable\, and in the case of the R8 c heck the return times as well because it doesn’t normally run at all after mid-evening. At the time of writing\, the last 146 leaves Downe at 11.2 0pm.

This autumn festival makes a most welcome return. The first night (Thur sday) of the festival will be a preview night with access limited to OLC a nd CAMRA members only. Doors open at 18.00. The festival proper then opens at noon on t he Friday & Saturday\, closing at 11pm on both days. It then concludes w ith an afternoon session on the Sunday from noon to 16.00. Visitors who are not members of the OLC or CAMRA must buy entrance tickets for each day in advance. They cost £1.00 per person and may be purchased from 1st Octo ber either over the bar or online.

This social begins at The Bull Inn – a venue which we h aven’t visited for some time. To get there use the high-frequency bus ro ute 51 (Orpington Station to Woolwich)\, alighting at The Broomwood. The pub is about 250 metres walk from there\, on the other side of the River C ray. The pub was grade II listed in 1973 – one of only three in the borou gh to have this accolade. The cask ale offerings usually include Landlor d and London Pride. Arrival time is 19:30.

From there we continue to th e Cricketers Knoll which offers a changing range of two cask ales. We plan to arrive at about 9:15\, using the 51 bus to travel between the two venues. For anyone joining the social here\, the pub is a short walk from Orpington High Street. Alternatively use bus routes 51\ , 61\, 208 or 353 and alight at High Street/Church Hill. The Goodmead Roa d stop is slightly closer\, but (due to the one-way system) can only be us ed on buses which are travelling away from the High Street.

This social has been amended due to road closures in Hayes a t the time we were planning to visit. However \, it still provides an op portunity to visit both of the superb Real Ale Way micropubs that we have in our borough.

We will now begin at the the Hayes venue\, at 2pm. This family-owned micropub opened its doors in July 2018\, and offers a most we lcome option for local drinkers and rail commuters alike. The pub overlook s the entrance to Hayes station\, and is also served by numerous bus route s. Up to 9 real ales are served on gravity from a coldroom to the rear of the bar.

The social continues (using the 119 bus) to the West Wickham venue where we plan to arrive at around 15: 45. This micropub opened in September 2021. It operates in a simila r manner to its predecessor in Hayes\, with up to seven cask ales\, almost all of which are sourced from smaller breweries in Kent\, dispensed by gr avity from a coldroom. West Wickham railway station is a few minutes walk away. To reach the pub from central Bromley\, use the high-frequency 119 bus and alight at High Street/Wickham Court Road Road which is near the pub. From Beckenham use the 194.

This social begins at the Prince Frederick . This Greene King pub is a short walk from Sundridge Park railway station\, or from Central Bromley use routes 126\, 261 or 336 and alight at Park Avenue. The pub is rather hidden away in the back streets\, so a having a map be useful if you are unfamiliar with the area. At the time of writing there is a 10% discount for CAMRA members on purchases of cask ale.

We continue to the Crown in Sundridge (arrival time 8.45pm appx). This venue reopened as a pub in 2022\, hav ing previously been an Indian restaurant and before that the Crown Hotel. It is next to Sundridge Park station\, whilst bus users should use rout e 314 bus route (which passes Bromley South) and alight at Plaistow Grove. The regular beers are Landlord and Doom Bar\, and there is normally a g uest from breweries such as Tonbridge.

A chance to visit arguably one of the most rural pu bs in the branch area\, situated only a few hundred yards from the boundary with Kent. As well as a decent range of cask beers\, the pu b also boasts an extensive food menu and one of the most attractive pub ga rdens in our branch area.

Our plan is travel to the pub using the R5/R10 bus route which is a circular route beginning and ending its journe y at Orpington bus station (adjacent to the railway station). The partic ular bus we have in mind leaves the bus station at 13:18\, calling at Gree n St. Green at 13:33\, and arriving at the Blacksmiths Arms at 14:00. ~~Her e is a link to the full timetable.~~

We begin at The Black Horse at 7:30pm. The Black Horse has improved its real ale offering in recent years and is worth a visit if you haven’t tri ed it recently. Despite its remote location in Biggin Hill\, the pub is easy to get to since it has a bus stop outside its front door on the high- frequency 320 route which starts in Catford and passes both Bromley North and Bromley South stations. Alight at Biggin Hill/Black Horse. Route s 246\, 464 and R2 also serve this stop\, but are less frequent.

F rom there we will again use the 320 to reach the King’s Arms in Keston\, with arrival scheduled for 9:00pm . This pub has experienced a rather turbulent few years with periods of being closed and also being a Turkish restaurant. This will be our firs t social there since it reopened as a pub on May 8\, 2025.

Our first social of the New Year takes us to West Wickham. The social begins at 7.30pm at the large and comfortable Wheatsheaf w hich can easily be reached by the high-frequency 119 bus route from Bromle y via Hayes\, or the 194 from Beckenham. Alight at High Street/Manor Ro ad. West Wickham railway station is about half a mile away.

From there we will continue to the (West Wickham) Real Ale Way at 8pm. This is the second “Real Ale Way” to open in Bromley borough. It operates in a similar manner to its well-known predecessor in Hayes\, wit h up to seven cask ales\, usually sourced from smaller breweries in Kent\, and dispensed by gravity from a coldroom.

Finally we will visit the Railway – a well-known Ember Inn close to West Wickham station. Like all the Ember Inns in our branch area\, a discount is avai lable on purchases of pints of cask ale. A nearby bus stop offers a con venient way back to Central Bromley using the 352 route.

The Three Hounds bar & bottle-shop opened duri ng the 2020 Covid crisis\, and as lockdown eased was able to open more ful ly in Summer 2021. As well as an extensive twelve keg beer range\, thre e cask beers are available and six still ciders too. Beers are sourced mai nly from local & national microbreweries. The Cockpit has been judged runner-up in Greate r London CAMRA’s Pub of the Year competition for 2025 where it competed ag ainst pubs chosen by the other 12 Greater London CAMRA branches. This i s the second time that the Cockpit has been runner-up in this competition. This is a fine achievement for this popular micropub which has only bee n open since late 2020. A range of at at least 5 non-mainstream real ales are normally available\, served from a cold room at the rear of the pub.\n
From Central Bromley\, use buses 162 (Beckenham Junction to Eltham )\, 269 (Bromley North to Bexleyheath) or the Superloop SL3 service. We begin at 19:30 at the The Hit or Miss which opened its doors for the first time on in October 2022\, in premises which were previ ously occupied by a computer repair and sales shop. If the name seems unfamiliar\, it’s because until relatively recent ly it was known as the Bitter End Bar\, and as such was the first micropub in Bromley town centre. After a brief closure it reopened on August 25\ , 2023. The pub is passed by numerous bus routes including routes 61\, 208\, 261\, 320\, 336 and 358. The Black Horse has improved its real ale offering in recent years and is worth a visit if you haven’t tried it recently.

Despite its remote location in Biggin Hill\, the pub is easy to get to since it has a bus stop outside it s front door on the high-frequency 320 route which starts in Catford and p asses both Bromley North and Bromley South stations. Alight at Biggin H ill/Black Horse. Routes 246\, 464\, R2 and R8 also serve this stop\, bu t are less frequent.

We anticipate that the club will be presented with an award for being (one of only four) National finalists in CAMRA’s 2025 Club of the Year competition during the course of the evening.

The return of the traditional Easter beer festival at the Greyhound which will run from Good Friday to Easter Sunday. The pub has changed management since the previous festival\, so we are cur rently not sure whether the format will be same as at previous festivals.
