With the long days of summer now upon us, we have a chance to resume our “out of area” socials again, beginning with a visit to Tonbridge, where the real ale scene is now thriving. The four pubs we will visit are all in the current Good Beer Guide, and all of them are within half a mile of the station. The plan is to meet at Orpington station at 11.40 from where we will take the 11.56 train direct to Tonbridge. The itinerary after that is as follows:-12:15 The Nelson Arms, 19 Cromer Street TN9 1UP. (Local branch Pub of the Year).13:30 The Beer Seller 64 High Street TN9 1EH 14:30 The Humphrey Bean, 94 High Street TN9 1AP15:30 Fuggles Beer Cafe, 165 High Street, TN9 1BX Note that the Humphrey Bean is an above-average Wetherspoon outlet, and provides the opportunity to eat.
A chance to visit two pubs situated about 200 yards from each other in leafy Chislehurst. We begin at the The Ramblers Rest at 2pm. This attractively situated pub is less than 10 minutes walk from Chislehurst Station but the walk is sharply uphill. The walk can be avoided by catching the 162 (Beckenham Junction to Eltham), 269 (Bromley North to Bexleyheath) or R7 (Five Bells to Chislehurst) bus. In all cases alight at Susan Wood. The first two routes mentioned can be caught in Central Bromley. We continue to the historic Imperial Arms (3pm).

The Darenth Valley contains arguably the most attractive scenery to be found within easy reach of Bromley. Today’s social offers the chance to enjoy a short walk in the valley, as well as visits to 5 country pubs. Total walking distance is about 4-5 kilometres and should be fine for most able-bodied people. The return walk is mainly uphill though, including the final section back to Eynsford station. Our plan is to meet at Bromley South Station at 11.40 to catch the 11:53 Thameslink train to Eynsford. The same train calls at several stations in our borough – namely Beckenham Hill, Ravensbourne, Shortlands, Bickley and St Mary Cray. The final destination of the train is Sevenoaks. Trains run at 30-minute intervals on this line, so getting back to Bromley isn’t a problem. The day’s itinerary is as follows:-12:30 – Five Bells, High Street, DA4 0AB13:30 – Walk to Farningham.14:00 – Pied [.....]
