This pub is in one of the borough’s more rural locations and is best reached by bus. Get the 146 from Bromley North/South or the R8 from Orpington station and alight at the terminus in Downe Village. But the services are infrequent so check the timetable, and in the case of the R8 check the return times as well because it doesn’t run late.

This well-known venue has been a Young’s outlet for the best part of a century. It also holds the distinction of being the first pub in our branch area to be included in the Good Beer Guide, nearly 50 years ago. From Central Bromley, use buses 162 (Beckenham Junction to Eltham) or 269 (Bromley North to Bexleyheath). Both routes can be caught in Central Bromley and also pass Chislehurst station. From other parts of the borough routes 61, 160, 161 or 273 can be used. In all cases alight at Chislehurst War Memorial.

After our visit to one of the borough’s oldest pubs we continue to one of the newest. The Cockpit is Chislehurst’s first micropub, and opened its doors for the first time in late December 2020. It is only a few yards from the Bull’s Head, so the directions to reach the pub are the same. A range of at at least five non-mainstream real ales are normally available, served from a cold room at the rear of the pub.

This popular festival can be reached by train. However the closest station – Kidbrooke – is about 20 minutes walk away, and there are no direct trains from there to any station in our borough, so a change of trains (probably at Lewisham or Nunhead depending upon your starting point) will be needed. For some members it may be easier to use the 314 bus which starts in New Addington and passes Bromley South on its way to Eltham. Alight at Eltham High Street / Passey Place, and then catch either the 132 or 286 from stop “N” toward Greenwich, alighting at Rochester Way / Broad Walk. The club is then less than 5 minutes walk away.Of course other routes may be better depending on your starting point. Tonight’s special social celebrates the work of two very new and very local breweries – Marlix and Mutineers, both of whom are located in the Bromley CAMRA branch area not far from the pub. Come and try some varied and tasty beers.The venue is Central Bromley’s first micropub which opened its doors on Friday 3rd May 2019. The name is derived from the ironmongers who previously occupied the premises. Several real ales are dispensed from a cold room behind the bar. The best bus routes are the 208 and 320 both of which pass Bromley South station. Alight at Bromley Magistrates Court.

The pub which was Bromley CAMRA Pub of the Year for 2017 isn’t close to any railway station, but can be reached using the 146 or 246 buses from Central Bromley. Alight at Keston/The Fox. Neither of these is a high frequency route, so it’s worth checking the timetable. Bromley CAMRA members who are not on the committee are always welcome to attend committee meetings. Non-committee members planning to attend a meeting may request the Secretary (secretary@bromley.camra.org.uk) to prepare and print a pack of relevant committee papers to be made available at the meeting.The meeting will be held in the tea-house in the pub’s garden.
