Enjoy a healthy walk in the countryside and visit some excellent pubs en-route
Bromley CAMRA has identified a network of paths and tracks which link them all together. We have published a series of brief guides for these walks, which range in distance from less than a mile to about 5 miles.
Each of the Bromley Pub Walk Guides briefly describes the route and terrain, lists the pubs/clubs that you can visit, and provides information about public transport.
Almost all of the pubs & clubs are accessible by public transport on at least 6 days of the week, so it’s really easy for drinkers and walkers to get to and from these excellent establishments, to get out into the fresh air, take some exercise and enjoy a drink or two.
Since the first route guides were published in 2019, additional routes have been added and most of the original guides have been updated. An additional 8 routes were added in 2023 and guides for further routes are in preparation.
The London spring cider festival returns again this year on Saturday April 20th with a fine selection of traditional ciders and perries from small producers around the country and also including a number from London cider makers. This new venue (located at Rocket Van Studio, 92 Brandon Street SE17 1AL) is about 400 yards walk from Elephant & Castle station, which can normally be reached by direct trains from Bromley South and other stations on the Thameslink line. However, engineering work may be taking place on this route on the date of the festival so please check the national rail journey planner if you plan to attend. An alternative route would be to travel to London Bridge and then use the tube to get to Elephant and Castle. Doors open at noon, and the festival will remain open until 9pm unless all the drink is sold out earlier. More information [.....]
The Three Hounds is a relatively new bar/pub/shop which began life by operating a delivery service during the Covid lockdown. Although the beer selection is mainly keg (up to 12 offerings), cask ale has gradually become more prominent, with up to three choices often available nowadays. The pub is very close to Clock House railway station, or can be reached using bus routes 194, 227, 354 or 358. Alight at Clock House. The Pub of the Year (2024) runner-up award certificate will be presented during the evening.
This committee meeting will be held in the upstairs room at the Lord Holmesdale which is situated opposite the main Bromley Tesco in Homesdale Road. This is a pub which is trying to increase its real ale offering, so hopefully we can provide some encouragement in the form of cask ale sales. To reach the pub, there is a 15 minute walk from Bickley station or to avoid that, use bus route 336 (Catford to Locksbottom via Central Bromley), and alight at the nearby Lord Homesdale bus stop (yes I know that the bus stop spelling doesn’t match the pub name – take it up with TfL, not me! – TW). Bromley CAMRA members who are not on the committee are always welcome to attend committee meetings. Non-committee members planning to attend a meeting may request the Secretary (secretary@bromley.camra.org.uk) to prepare and print a pack of relevant committee papers to [.....]
Venue : Old Dartfordians Sports Club, War Memorial Club House, Bourne Rd, Bexley DA5 1LW A consistently excellent beer festival. The venue can be reached by train to Bexley station, or alternatively catch the 269 from Bromley North to Bexleyheath (via Bickley, Chislehurst and Sidcup) and alight at Bexley War Memorial. Either way a walk of about 15 minutes is then needed, although a short journey on local bus routes 132, 229 or 492 from Bexley can be used to get closer. Alight at Hartford Road. (Note by TW – I looked into whether the new Superloop bus route SL3 would make the journey even easier. It doesn’t!. But if you just miss the 269 at Bromley North, and an SL3 arrives, the latter will probably overtake the former by Chislehurst or Sidcup as its a limited stop service). Venue : Dulwich Hamlets Football Club, Champion Hill, Edgar Kail Way, London SE22 8BD A different venue for the SEL festival this year at Dulwich Hamlets football club. The festival runs from the 23rd to the 25th, and is open from noon to 10:30pm each day. Up to 50 cask ales will be available as well as around 25 ciders and perries. Admission is £3 for CAMRA members and this includes a commemorative beer glass (which however cannot be returned for a refund). For most members in our branch area, the most convenient way to reach the venue is by using the train to East Dulwich station which is little more than 100 metres from the venue. This station can be reached by using the half-hourly stopping service from Beckenham Junction to London Bridge. The service also stops in our branch area at Birkbeck and Crystal Palace.
