The table below is a list of all the winners and runners-up of the Bromley CAMRA Pub of the Year and Club of the Year competition since the branch started running the competition. Where two runners-up are shown, it indicates that the voting was tied. Click on the pub name to see their CAMRA Experience website entry.
Below the table, we explain the selection process used by Bromley CAMRA.
How Bromley CAMRA selects the Pub and Club of the year
The selection process involves the following stages:
- Members are invited to nominate one pub and/or one club to be considered for the award (Dec and early Jan)
- Members are also invited to volunteer to be a member of the judging panels
- All nominations received by the deadline are then shortlisted by the branch committee, with five pubs and two clubs being selected for judging (early Jan)
- The results of the shortlisting are announced (mid Jan)
- Members of the judging panels visit all the shortlisted pubs and/or clubs. Judging is carried out using the CAMRA standard judging criteria (mid Jan to mid Feb)
- The winners and runner(s)-up are announced (early March)
The Branch Committee agreed a few changes in the selection process for the 2026 award, these included:
- It is no longer a requirement for a pub or club to have been selected as a potential entry in the next issue of the Good Beer Guide
- The names of the pubs and clubs selected for judging will now be announced as soon as shortlisting has been completed
- The judging period for the pubs has been extended to be five weeks
The nomination stage
- The opening of the nomination period will be announced in the branch newsletter and on social media
- All members of Bromley Branch are welcome to submit a nomination for one pub and/or one club
- All members of Bromley Branch are welcome to volunteer to join the judging panel for the pubs and/or the clubs
- There is no limit to the number of judges who may take part
The shortlisting stage
- Shortlisting is undertaken by the Bromley Branch Committee
- All pub and club nominations received are copied to all members of the Committee
- Shortlisting will be carried out based on the following criteria:
- Nominations received, both the number of nominations and the reasons given for nomination
- Average beer scores / No. of scores received / No. of members scoring
- Committee members will submit their shortlisting decisions by means of online voting
- In the event of a tie for the 5th pub / 3rd club, the one selected for judging will be that which received the highest average beer score, as reported to the GBG Selection Meeting
- The results of the shortlisting will be announced via social media
The judging stage
- All judges are required to visit all of the shortlisted pubs and/or clubs during the judging periods
- Whilst visiting pubs/clubs judges are asked to not disclose that they are judging for an award
- Judging is carried out using the CAMRA standard judging criteria (as is used in the subsequent regional and national stages)
- At the end of the judging period, judges will meet to agree the award decisions.
- The judges’ decision is based on both:
- the total number of points awarded by the judges and;
- the ranking (order of preference) of the pubs/clubs by the individual judges
- In the event of there not being one pub/club being the winner on both counts, the judges will discuss the relative merits of the potential winners and make a decision on this basis.
Announcement of the winners
- The award decisions will be kept under strict embargo for a number of days to allow for:
- Notifications to be given (subject to embargo) to the winners and runner-up
- Preparation for announcements
- The first announcements of the winners and runners-up will be made via the Bromley CAMRA social media
Award presentations
- Bromley CAMRA will make arrangements with the winning pub and club for a presentation event at the pub/club to hand over a framed certificate in recognition of their achievement
- In practice, the presentation event may need to be some months after the initial announcement (due to fitting in with existing commitments and press dates for publications etc)
- The runners-up will also offered the opportunity to hold a presentation event
The next stage (the Greater London Regional Award)
- As soon as Bromley Branch has announced the names of the winning pub and club, that information is passed to Greater London Regional CAMRA for them to be included in the regional judging
- All 12 branches in Greater London each select a Pub of the Year and they all go forward for regional judging during the period April to July, with the regional winner normally being announced during July
- Not all branches in Greater London have clubs eligible for the Club of the Year competition, however those branch clubs which have been selected are also judged between April to July
- All branches in Greater London are expected to participate in the judging of the pubs and Bromley branch members are welcome to be involved in that judging (normally announced in our newsletter)
Which Clubs are eligible to enter the Club award?
- The only clubs which are eligible to be considered for the award are those which allow access to card-carrying members of CAMRA
- As at November 2025, only the following clubs are eligible
- Beckenham RFC;
- Orpington Liberal Club;
- Royal British Legion Club, Hayes
- Royal British Legion Club, Petts Wood (but currently no cask ale)
- If you are a member of a different club which you think might be interested in welcoming CAMRA members, please discuss it with the Secretary or Chair of your club. If they might wish to proceed, then please let us know
